Union Station

Union Station is a formal response to the city of Memphis’s request for proposals detailing the re-use plan of the former Memphis police department’s union precinct. The proposed development is diverse in program, including an anchor hotel, commercial retail building, and four residential apartment buildings. Serving guests of the nearby Liberty Park sports complex, the hotel is positioned across the Union Ave. corridor, providing an urban front to the sidewalk while maintaining the commercial character of the street. Its materials and building form are quiet with moments of expression. The retail building is also pushed to the sidewalk along Union Avenue, providing a broad shaded patio for outdoor dining, adding to the pedestrian experience. The Southern portion of the site borders a residential neighborhood that includes both single-family and multi-family housing.

Given the smaller scale of residential context, the development locates four three-story apartment/condo buildings along Linden Ave. The apartments cantilever over ground floor garage spaces and feature fully glazed walls and balconies. The collective group of apartments creates a dense, urban residential experience of the site. The outdoor spaces between the buildings are the heart of the development. These outdoor spaces allow for hotel guests to join locals in enjoying outdoor dining, lounging, shopping and conversation on generous sidewalks, shaded by mature trees and activated in the evenings by sensitive lighting.
